Zygiella x-notata |
This spider is easily identified by the very distinctive web built by adult. The orb-web of this spider contains a missing sector in the upper corner which is free of spirals (I will upload a picture of one of the webs soon). Immature spiders of this species produce a normal complete orb-web. In the missing sector is a strong line of silk (signal line) leading to the spiders retreat. This way of constructing webs allows this spider to build webs against flat surfaces and can often be seen on window frames in and around houses. Females of this species are among the few British orb-weavers to build webs all year round.
