Zygiella atrica |
This spider is easily identified by the very distinctive web built by adult. The orb-web of this spider contains a missing sector in the upper corner which is free of spirals (I will upload a picture of one of the webs soon). Immature spiders of this species produce a normal complete orb-web. In the missing sector is a strong line of silk (signal line) leading to the spiders retreat. This spider is found away from houses and is more brown than Zygiella x-notata. Females of this species are among the few British orb-weavers to build webs all year round.
